Microsofts Fehltritt

Firefox-SmilieDarüber freuen sich der Firefox- und der Opera-Freund: Ein Fachjournalist und -kolumnist rät Microsoft in einem amerikanischen Fachmagazin, die Entwicklung seines Browsers einzustellen und stattdessen Firefox und Opera finanziell zu unterstützen. Dann könne man sich ganz auf die Sicherheit des Betriebssystems konzentrieren, anstatt Problem zu beheben, die durch den Internet Explorer auftreten. Aber:

Of course we already know that this will never happen, since Microsoft is a creature of habit. So it will forever be plagued by its greatest blunder ever. Have fun, boys.

WordPress als CMS

Hier (englisch) wird erklärt, wie man mit WordPress aus einem Weblog ein CMS macht. Im Wesentlichen wird beschrieben, wie man eine statische Seite zur Startseite macht.

The hack can be summarized in four easy steps:

  • Find a theme and do any fine-tuning
  • Design the home page as a Page in WordPress. Give it a post-slug of home. Test that it looks ok.
  • Copy index.php to home.php. (Sorry, that’s an FTP job.)
  • Edit home.php, and immediately after the first line add in the line:

    <?php query_posts(‚pagename=home‘) ?>

Now, when visitors access the home URL, WordPress will display only the Page with a page-slug of home. It’s no longer a blog — it’s a website.

Ubuntu: Nach dem Erpel kommt der Molch

Heute soll die Beta-Version von Ubuntu 6.06 „Dapper Drake“ veröffentlicht werden, außerdem wurde gestern der Name der nachfolgenden Version bekannt gemacht, „The Edgy Eft“. Mark Shuttleworth:

And here’s why. Edgy is all about cutting edge, perhaps bleeding edge, brand new code and infrastructure. It will be the right time to bring in some seriously interesting but definitely edgy new technologies which lay the groundwork for the next wave of Ubuntu development.

An Eft is a youthful newt, going through its first exploration of the rocky territory just outside the stream. And that’s exactly what we hope the development team will do with Ubuntu during the Edgy cycle – explore slightly unfamiliar and uncharted territory that is perhaps a little out of the mainstream.
